Jacob Rainey grew up in Charlottesville, Virginia, before attending Woodberry Forest School, a boarding school just north of his hometown. A promising young quarterback, Jacob attracted attention from Division I football programs throughout high school.

Before his junior year, tragedy struck during a preseason scrimmage. On a routine quarterback power, Jacob’s knee dislocated violently, tearing every ligament, breaking a bone, and — most devastatingly — severing his popliteal artery. Despite emergency vascular surgery, complications led to compartment syndrome, threatening his life. One week later, Jacob’s leg was amputated above the knee.

Defying expectations and medical advice, Jacob returned to the field for his senior season becoming the first person to do so. As team captain, he led his teammates with grit and determination, throwing multiple touchdowns and proving that his spirit was unshakable. Jacob went on to the University of Virginia football team as a preferred walk-on. Though he ultimately didn’t play a down at UVA, he remained an active team member throughout his four years at UVA.

Rather than dwelling on why his injury happened, Jacob approached his new reality with gratitude and purpose. He believes deeply in viewing adversity as an opportunity to demonstrate resilience, strength, and grit — not only for personal growth but to inspire those around him.

Recognizing the resources and support that made his recovery and accomplishments possible, Jacob is passionate about giving back. He works to help others facing their own challenges by getting involved with various foundations, speaking and serving as a mentor. Today, Jacob lives in Arlington, Virginia, with his wife, Nikki, and their dog, Rags. He serves as Director of Investor Operations at Fundrise, an innovative online investment platform based in  Washington, D.C.

Each new Conquering Kili class accepts the challenge to embark for the summit, a walk that represents the miles that many African women journey on a daily basis to fetch water for their families. While training for the climb, each team member works to raise funds and transform communities through the gift of clean water.
