World Water Day 2023: Our Recent Trip to Tanzania

Waterboys Team

March 24, 2023

World Water Day was on Wednesday. WWD 2023 is about accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. Water affects us all and we need everyone to take action. Watch our WWD Instagram reel by clicking here and read below to learn how our water access work has recently changed lives. The reel corresponds with the inspiring stories below.

Last month, we traveled to East Africa to visit some of our clean water projects in person. Our Conquering Kili crew and the Chris Long Foundation team visited three communities in Tanzania: Losesia, Nafco, and Sokoni. These communities were at three different stages in the process of receiving a deep borehole well. As you’ll see in the above reel, Chris Long and the Conquering Kili climbers first visited a water hole near Losesia. This was a natural water source where most of the Losesia community traveled to gather water in jerry cans to take back to their village. The water hole was unreliable due to drought and contained dirty water that can be risky to drink. At the time of our visit, hydrological surveys were being conducted in this area to search for aquifers, where we could drill and install a deep borehole well, providing sustainable clean water for this community.

The second community we visited was Nafco. The Nafco villagers were also Maasai people. You can see them collecting water at another natural water source – a river. The water is dirty – and the village chief informed us that their community had to compete with elephants and other wildlife to collect water here, which could be dangerous. The Nafco community contained a nearby school. We have seen time and time again that when rural communities are provided with lasting clean water, everyone thrives – particularly children, women and girls. After hydrological surveys were conducted here, suitable aquifers were identified and the drilling process had begun.

The last community in Tanzania we visited was Sokoni. This was a school where thousands of children and community members were and continue to be served by this completed Waterboys well. As you can see, Chris and the crew planted trees to symbolize our lasting partnership with this school. The Conquering Kili crew took a photo in front of the water storage tank. NFL legends Ali Marpet and Jabaal Sheard shared their experiences with Sokoni school.

We are happy to report that both the Nafco and Losesia communities have also successfully received Waterboys wells since our visit! This World Water Day and onward, if you support the work we’re doing, we ask that you take the time to donate. It could be $50, $25, or whatever you can give for now. Signing up to join The Wave, our community of monthly givers, goes even further to bolster our resources and provide lasting clean water to these communities. Become a donor today! If not now, when?

Thank you for your generous support.
