Progress to Goal
About the Group
Over 20 years ago, Tom Lawrence set a personal goal to climb the Seven Summits, the seven highest peaks on each continent. After reaching the summit of Denali, the highest point in North America, in June, 2017, Tom has set his intention on reaching the summit of Mt. Everest in 2018. He leaves on March 24, 2018 and plans to reach the highest point on Earth in the middle of May. While climbing is a very personal endeavor, Tom wanted his climb to serve an important purpose outside of himself.
Having become familiar with Waterboys, which is a charity founded by Philadelphia Eagles Defensive End Chris Long that funds deep borehole water wells that serve up to 7,500 people, per well, in Africa, Tom created the “Tom Lawrence Everest 2018” Waterboys group to fund a Waterboys water well.
The broad impact of a lack of water in Sub-Saharan African cannot be understated. Women are primarily responsible for retrieving water, and often have to bring their children. Reducing the distance to a water source by just 15 minutes results in a 12% increase in girls’ school attendance. People living in Sub-Saharan Africa spend more than 40 billion hours per year retrieving water. Water access frees time to generate income. Additionally, with dependable access to ample drinking water, families can afford to farm. Finally, water-related diseases, which cause nearly 1 in 5 deaths of children under 5 and which are responsible for 50% of hospitalized patients, can be prevented.
Tom has fully funded his climb and his company, Benefit Recovery Group, has made an initial donation of $3,000 to the Waterboys effort. Donations of any amount are appreciated. You may donate $6.00 to provide water to one person, $30.00 to provide water access to one household, $100.00 to save 35,000 hours spent on water retrieval, or $300.00 to prevent a multi-mile water carries.
Or, if you want to motivate Tom to reach the highest points on the mountain, you can pledge in a comment on social media sites where this link is posted that you will be a camp 1, camp 2, camp 3, camp 4, or summit sponsor.
A camp 1 sponsor would donate $250 if Tom reaches camp 1, which is 19,685 feet.
A camp 2 sponsor would donate $500 if Tom reaches camp 2, which is 21,000 feet.
A camp 3 sponsor would donate $1,000 if Tom reaches camp 3, which is 23,625 feet.
A camp 4 sponsor would donate $1,500 if Tom reaches camp 4, which is 26,085 feet.
A summit sponsor would donate $2,500 if Tom reaches the summit, which is 29,029 feet.
Thank you for your consideration and let’s get Tom to the summit and bring water to 7,500 people in Africa!
